Supplies for Successful Beekeeping

Those wanting to start beekeeping need the right equipment to do so. This includes a beekeeping suit and veil, smoker, hive tool, extractor, pollen trap, and a bee brush. Having the right tools for the job is paramount for successful beekeeping.

To set-up the hive, basic essential components include:

  • The hive itself (Langstroth, Warre, or horizontal)
    • 16-20 deep frames
    • 16-20 shallow or medium frames
    • 2 deep boxes (for 8 or 10 frames)
    • 1 bottom board
    • 1 mouse guard
    • 1 entrance reducer
    • 1 inner cover
    • 1 telescoping outer cover
    • 1 feeder (top feeding, or mason jar feeding)
  • Apps like Apiary or HiveHawk
  • Bees
  • Bee brush
  • Extractor (manual crank or electric)
  • Feeding equipment
  • Hive tool
  • Honey harvesting supplies (i.e. jars, covers, labels)
  • Protective clothing: bee suit, veil, gloves
  • Smoker
